Hurricane Kristy Approaches Mexico

Hurricane Kristy, which has reached category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, is located about 1,045 kilometers from Cabo San Lucas, with maximum sustained winds of 205 km/h and gusts of up to 250 km/h. According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of the National Water Commission (Conagua), the hurricane is expected to move northwest towards Mexico and could affect the Baja California Sur peninsula. However, authorities indicate that it currently does not pose a direct danger to most of Mexican territory.

On the other hand, various atmospheric factors have been identified that could enhance Kristy's effects in different regions of Mexico. Low-pressure channels in the northwest, west, and southeast of the country, along with instability in the upper atmosphere and the influx of humidity from both the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, are creating conditions for rain and showers in several areas. The most intense rains are forecasted to mainly affect states such as Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco, with possible heavy precipitation. Additionally, influence is expected in the Yucatán Peninsula and regions of central Mexico.

Furthermore, the subtropical jet stream is generating strong wind gusts, with a risk of sandstorms in the Northern Mesa and Central Mesa, which could impair visibility on roads and pose a danger to transportation. Residents of the mentioned areas are urged to stay alert to weather conditions, as the increase in rain could cause flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Despite Kristy's strength, warm weather is expected to persist in the northwest and north of the country. It is vital for the population of Baja California Sur and other affected areas to stay informed and follow official guidelines regarding any changes in the hurricane's trajectory or intensity. The SMN of Conagua is maintaining surveillance and monitoring of this phenomenon to provide accurate information to the population about its evolution and possible risks.
